The Chinese mainland will strengthen communication and exchanges with all political parties and groups in Taiwan, including the Chinese Kuomintang party, a mainland spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

On Sunday, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, congratulated Cheng Li-wun on her election as chairperson of the KMT. Cheng replied the same day to express her gratitude.

Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a regular press conference that Xi's congratulatory message to Cheng has charted the course for the development of relations between the CPC and the KMT, as well as for cross-Strait relations.

"We will fully implement the spirit of the congratulatory message," Zhu said. "We will enhance communication and exchanges with all political parties, groups, and representatives in Taiwan, including the Kuomintang, based on the shared political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing 'Taiwan independence'."

She added that the mainland will unite compatriots in Taiwan and make them "become more proud, confident, and assured in their identity as Chinese people".

"We will deepen exchanges and cooperation, promote common development, advance national reunification, and firmly safeguard the shared home of the Chinese nation," Zhu said. "We will also protect the fundamental interests of compatriots on both sides of the Strait and work together to create a brighter future for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."
