Rough diamond，“粗糙的鉆石、未經(jīng)加工的鉆石”，看上去和我們中文里“未經(jīng)琢磨的璞玉”很像吧，沒錯！“璞玉”是指還沒有顯示出最佳品質(zhì)的人或物，所謂把“璞玉”打磨成“美玉”，總有發(fā)光出彩的一天；而rough diamond則指的是a person who has a kind and generous nature or great ability, but whose outward manner is rather rough. 即“外粗內(nèi)秀的人；脾氣壞但良心好的人”，具有這樣品質(zhì)的人往往并非一眼就能看出，而是需要多多了解，多多交流才能體會?？磥?，東西方人對于“內(nèi)秀”的理解還相當合拍呢！
例如：
Peter looks awkward, but he is a rough diamond.
彼德看上去笨手笨腳，但事實上他是一個很內(nèi)秀的人。
這條成語還有一種形式：diamond in the rough.
例如：
Do not look down upon him! I am sure he is a diamond in the rough.
別小看他！我堅信他是一個外粗內(nèi)秀的人。
