Apple是蘋果，這個人人都知道，你知道apple of one’s eye 是什么意思嗎？你知道它是怎么來的嗎？
Apple of one’s eye里的apple指的是瞳孔，是眼睛里最敏感最珍貴的部分。這條成語來自《圣經(jīng)·詩篇》第十七篇第八節(jié)：“求你保護(hù)我，如同保護(hù)眼中的瞳孔。” (Keep me as the apple of the eye.)
Apple of one's eye指的是極珍貴或極寶貴的人或物、掌上明珠。這種比喻大約在公元885年就出現(xiàn)了，從此開始廣泛流傳。
雖然蘋果作為身體健康和好運(yùn)的象征由來已久，但有關(guān)apple of one's eye短語的起源卻反映出人類過去在解剖學(xué)上的無知。在摸清眼球結(jié)構(gòu)之前，人類一直以為眼瞳不是個洞，而是個實心的球體。蘋果也許是我們在日常生活中經(jīng)常能見到的球體，于是，這個“微小的球體”就被稱為“眼睛中的蘋果”。
視覺是我們最重要的感覺，因此不難理解當(dāng)人們說到“視覺的核心”，即“眼睛中的蘋果 (apple of the eye)”時，我們就會聯(lián)想到，那是對我們來說最為寶貴的東西。

Tom is the apple of his grandmother’s eye.
湯姆是他奶奶的掌上明珠。
John regarded the gold ring left by his dead wife as the apple of his eye.
約翰把他亡妻留下的這只金戒指視為珍寶。
