Small beer是“小啤酒”的意思嗎？難道啤酒還分大小？其實(shí)，在英國(guó)small beer指的是口味比較淡啤酒，但是在美語(yǔ)中則是“少量啤酒”的意思。比如說(shuō)夏天有客人來(lái)訪，問(wèn)他要喝些什么：Anything to drink？客人就可能回答說(shuō)：“I'll have a small beer（給我一點(diǎn)兒啤酒。）”
比喻用法中說(shuō)的small beer，指規(guī)模或者格局不大的事物。自以為了不起，不是小人物的人：He thinks no small beer of himself. Be small beer常用作與人比較的表現(xiàn)。
口語(yǔ)中常用small beer作形容詞，因此開(kāi)快餐店的朋友可以說(shuō)：Ours is a small-beer fast-food joint beside McDonald.
