CPI grows 2.7% year-on-year in March

China's Consumer Price Index (CPI) in March grew 2.7 percent over the same period of 2004 but fell 0.9 percent over February, according to figures released here Thursday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

NBS statistics disclosed that CPI in the first quarter grew 2.8 percent year-on-year. And the growth rate is basically the same as the same period last year.

In a breakdown, the March CPI for food went up 5.6 percent over February while that for non-food products grew 1.2 percent. The CPI for consumable climbed 2.4 percent while the CPI for services rose 3.6 percent.

Among foodstuff, CPIs for grain crops, meat and poultry, tobacco and wine went up 1.3 percent, 12.2 percent and 0.6 percent separately while that for oil and fat slid 3.6 percent.

CPIs for clothes, home appliances, medical care services, transportation and communication declined 2.5 percent, 0.7 percent, 0.6 percent and 1.2 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, CPIs for housing, entertainment and education went up 5.8 percent and 2.8 percent separately.
