Alarm buttons to replace partitions

The partitions separating drivers and passengers in the city's thousands of
taxis may be retired next year. Cabbies will soon be able to press an alarm
button connected to their GPS (global positioning system) units to summon police
in an emergency, Shanghai Morning Post reports.
The Shanghai Taxi Control Centre is slated to start operating next year as
taxis are gradually fitted with the GPS units.
Sources with the Shanghai Taxi Administration Office said the removal of the
partitions that protect drivers from physical attack would depend upon the
smooth operation of the control centre.
