Bomb defused at Spanish airline office in Rome ( 2003-10-08 23:14) (Agencies)
Italian explosives experts defused a parcel bomb left outside the office of Spanish national airline Iberia in central Rome on Wednesday, police said. Police said the bomb, made up of explosive powder, a fuse and a timer hidden inside a cooking pot, would have injured passers-by had it exploded. It is at least the third time in the past year that police have been called in to deal with explosive packages that have either detonated or been left outside Iberia's office or other Spanish interests in the Italian capital. Previous attacks were claimed by a group calling for the release of Italian anarchists jailed in Spain. In December last year, three parcels containing around 50 grams of explosive powder and a fuse were sent to two Iberia offices in Rome, and a parcel found at Rome's Fiumicino airport included a warning to air travellers to avoid Iberia. In June this year, a small bomb exploded outside the front entrance to the Cervantes Institute, a Spanish language school.
