Helicopter aprons rarely used
( 2003-09-04 13:34) (China Daily)

More than 20 skyscrapers in Shanghai have parking aprons for helicopters on their rooftops but most of them are rarely, if ever, used, reports Shanghai Morning Post.

Insiders said that in addition to the air space being within the jurisdiction of the air force administration, a lack of qualified pilots also keeps the rooftop helipads from getting much use.

The Hilton Shanghai was the first building in the city to have an apron constructed on its roof.

Both Changzheng Hospital and the Jinjiang Hotel also have parking aprons for helicopters.

And Huashan Hospital recently announced plans to build such an apron on its roof to handle time-sensitive cases and emergencies.

However, thanks to the city's rapid economic development, in 10-20 years, parking aprons atop tall buildings will no doubt be as elusive and sought after as parking spaces for cars are now.
