From campus to community: Weaving my life into heart of Hefei

Editor's note: We have invited foreigners living in China to share their stories about the cities where they live and work. Muhammad Zeeshan is a Pakistani PhD student at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, Anhui province. He has been living in Hefei for two and a half years.

I chose to pursue my doctoral degree in Medical Physics at the University of Science and Technology of China because of its outstanding global reputation, advanced research programs, and the scholarship opportunities it offers.
When I first arrived, Hefei seemed like a quiet city, perhaps even a little uneventful. But over time, I discovered its vibrant and welcoming character.
Life here is not only convenient but also fulfilling. Digital apps such as Alipay and WeChat make daily life effortless. Transportation networks are excellent, with subways, buses and high-speed trains. Both online and in-person shopping options are plentiful.
The affordable cost of living, combined with the beauty of Hefei's many parks, makes the city especially attractive for international students.
Like many foreigners, my biggest challenge was the language barrier. By learning Chinese, I overcame this difficulty and built stronger bonds with the local community.
My perception of Hefei has since changed — I now see it as a rapidly developing hub of science and innovation, where tradition and modernity blend harmoniously.
Chaohu Lake, with its serene scenery, remains one of my favorite places. At the same time, USTC continues to play a central role in shaping the city's identity as a "Science and Innovation City".
