This year, Gaolan county in Lanzhou, Gansu province, has obtained national geographical indication (GI) status for four distinctive agricultural products: Ruan'er pear, Heshangtou wheat, Hansha watermelon, and Hongsha potato. This recognition adds a "golden name card" to the region, reflecting its unique natural environment and centuries-old farming wisdom.

According to Wei Cuiping, a representative from the Gaolan county administration for market regulation, this achievement marks a significant milestone in leveraging intellectual property to boost local agriculture. It also demonstrates the county's solid progress in using GI to promote rural vitalization and industrial upgrading.
Despite this honor, these products still face challenges such as aging farmland, labor shortages, and limited market access. In Mingxing village, for example, local authorities are collaborating with universities to improve soil quality and promote large-scale farming. Through cooperative models, farmers are encouraged to participate in land transfer and local employment. E-commerce platforms, cold storage infrastructure, and deep processing are also being developed to extend the industrial value chain and increase incomes.

Looking ahead, Gaolan will focus on establishing standardized production systems for its GI products and further integrate e-commerce and cultural tourism to create a geographical indication-centered development model. The goal is to turn these golden name cards into "golden keys" for sustainable rural development.
