Fujian's trade with EU surges in H1, fueled by private enterprises

The total value of imports and exports traded in East China's Fujian province with the European Union hit 126.83 billion yuan ($17.67 billion) in the first half of 2025, representing a 7.6 percent year-on-year increase and setting a record for the period, according to Xiamen Customs.

Germany, the Netherlands and Spain were the top three trading partners of Fujian province with the EU in the six months.

Together, they accounted for 56.1 percent of total trade, with Germany being the biggest market worth 49.4 billion yuan, representing 38.9 percent of the province's total trade with the EU.

In terms of growth, Fujian saw an increase in trade with 16 EU member states such as Cyprus, Finland and Hungary in the first half of the year, with exports and imports to Cyprus skyrocketing by 13.4 times.

Private enterprises continued to play a leading role in Fujian's dealings with the EU. In the period, they handled 89.63 billion yuan worth of trade with Brussels, a year-on-year increase of 14.7 percent, accounting for over 70 percent of the total.

Exports, as the main driver, are continuously boosting trade between Fujian and Europe. In the first half of the year, exports to the EU from Fujian reached 108.35 billion yuan, a 9.1 percent increase year-on-year.

Machinery and electronic products accounted for 66.27 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 16 percent, representing over 60 percent of the total exports to the EU, with notable performance in exports of lithium-ion batteries, ships and electric automobiles.
