Sanya Phoenix International Airport's phase III terminal project is scheduled to start construction at the end of November this year. Once completed, the airport will be able to meet the demand of an annual 30-million-passenger throughput.
Since its opening, Sanya airport has played an important role in the development of Sanya and its surrounding areas. The passenger throughput exceeded 20 million in 2018, making it the first non-provincial capital city airport to reach that volume.
Under the opportunity of building the Hainan Free Trade Port and an international tourism consumption center, Sanya airport is faced with the increasingly prominent issue of insufficient capacity.
To address the growing contradiction between supply and demand in aviation transportation, Sanya airport plans to build a new T3 terminal on the west side of its existing international terminal.
It is expected to be completed and put into use by the end of 2025, with an annual throughput capacity of 18 million passengers. Together with the existing terminals, the airport will be able to handle 173,000 aircraft movements and 30 million passengers annually.
Additionally, after the completion of Phase III, Sanya airport will also be able to handle an annual cargo throughput of 450,000 metric tons. A series of optimizations will also be carried out for taxiways, parking positions, and comprehensive transportation hubs.
