The prolonged and extensive pumping of groundwater by humans has shifted the Earth's axis, which is tilting eastward at a rate of about 1.7 inches (4.3 cm) per year, according to a study published recently in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. A NASA researcher said that the shift in the Earth's axis over geological time could affect climate on a global scale.
