China's first deep-sea fish farm, Shenlan 1, harvested its first catch of Atlantic salmon last week, the agricultural authority of Shandong province said.
The farm is located in the aquaculture experiment zone off the coast of Qingdao West Coast New Area. The experiment zone is in the Yellow Sea cold water mass, with temperatures remaining below 12 C all year, which provides good growing environment for salmon and other cold-water species.
